Imagination Connoisseur, Kitty Adams, posted this open letter to MCU fans complaining about the She-Hulk trailer that recently dropped promoting the series (currently planned for an August 2022 debut).
Move over boys …
“Ugh, everything is so woke now. Ugh, female lead. Ugh, just a girl version of Hulk. Ugh.”
Guess what? She-Hulk has been a well-established character in Marvel since 1980. So no, not “new” and not a “woke knockoff.”
And yeah, I see from the trailer that this show appears to have “female Millennial Marvel fans” as a target audience. Frankly, as the target demographic, I’m pumped.
But if your complaints about a lot of the new shows and movies are that female characters have been given a more central role, and you’re put out because after Loki, Falcon & Solider, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Spiderman, and Dr. Strange, that we’re getting a FEMALE centric story … what’s your goal here?
Do you really think that Marvel should just be for men, about men, and the rest of us be excluded? What kind of grade school girls-have-cooties bullshit is that?
Women have been fans of Marvel even when we DIDN’T have much room at the table, and She-Hulk was one of the characters that elbowed our way in. We deserve a story about dealing with being a woman in her thirties being a reluctant superhero while trying to get shit done just like the male versions, which account for literally 91% of the Marvel titles.
If this isn’t your cup of tea, fine. Don’t drink. But if your knee-jerk reaction is initially the fact that it’s a female Hulk lawyer and that seems pointless to you, just go watch “BroMan: Badass Again with More Special effects.” You know, like most of the movies and shows that cater to you.
Don’t worry, pretty sure you’ll have another 10 lead male characters to imagine yourself as before we get another one.
