Imagination Connoisseur, Joe from Montreal, asks why studios don’t seem interested in making more “brutal, beautiful” films like Robert Eggers’s THE NORTHMAN.
Why won’t studios go back to making visceral films with great stories?
Hey Rob
I just walked out of Robert Eggers batshit insane THE NORTHMAN. It is a brutal, beautiful film. A big-budget art house movie that we seem to be missing from theatres these days. The balls that a studio must have to release this kind of movie, hoping it does well.
Why can’t studios go back to this kind of filmmaking? A stupid question that I already know the answer to, I know — but man — what a movie. It reminded me of Mel Gibson’s visceral Apocalypto, a movie that takes you to another time and place, governed by a filmmaker that has a passion for the subject and not looking for a paycheck.
We need more of this in theatres. I can’t think of watching a film like this at home. Anyways, have a good one and run to watch The Northman in theatres — right now.
