Imagination Connoisseur, Tommy Mårtensson, shares his thoughts on the 2019 horror film, COLOR OUT OF SPACE, directed by Richard Stanley. During a time when there are so many remakes and reboots, it’s nice to see something uniquely horrifying hit the theaters.
Kiss that quiet life back on the farm goodbye.
I adore this movie.
As a fan of Richard Stanley’s directorial work like “Dust Devil”, “Hardware” and “Brave” (no, not the Pixar movie ) I’ve been disappointed that he never directed a movie again after the disaster that was “The Island of Dr. Moraeu”, which he was fired from (There’s a great, fascinating documentary about that called “Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau” from 2014).
When the news was announced that he would not only return to direct movies but that it would be an H.P. Lovecraft adaptation (one of my favorite authors) I was beyond excited.
And safe to say I wasn’t disappointed.
This movie perfectly captures the fears that Lovecraft conveys, and it has a perfect pacing, perfect tone, great cinematography, and the performances really good. The score is a highlight as well.
The body horror stuff in this is like from a Cronenberg movie and like “The Fly” this movie packs quite a depressive punch. It sticks with me.
