Imagination Connoisseur, Jason Miller, writes a letter of support for ROBSERVATIONS host, Robert Meyer Burnett, who has recently proclaimed himself the Gatekeeper of Geekdom. Jason shares his experience defending RMB’s joke (made on Twitter) and arrives at an inescapable conclusion that everyone should probably take to heart.
“Get a life, people. It’s just a TV show.”
Hi Rob,
Long-time listener, first-time letter writer. I enjoy listening to the show very much.
Gatekeeping is not harassment or bullying. I defended you on a Facebook thread that was triggered by one of your recent tweets.
You basically said in your tweet that ST:SNW is for fans who don’t read sci-fi novels. And then you challenged people to list out books they’ve read. And you gave your opinion (jokingly) that if you don’t read, you don’t know sci-fi.
Well, the Defenders of the Victims of Gatekeeping came out in force to put you down for it. Shame on you, RMB! Shame, shame, shame! [Rings bell.]
And to that, I say, so fucking what? NuTrek fans think you’re a dick who bullies and harasses people on Twitter simply because you’re stating an overtly judgmental opinion of other fans?
“Get a life, people. It’s just a TV show.”
They were triggered because they accidentally saw your tweet. Their triggered feelings as a result of your tweet are their problem, not yours. And they need to GROK THAT.
If our species can’t overcome this limitation, I fear for free speech and democracy itself. I have the right to trigger people on the internet and so does everyone else. Get over it, NuTrek fans. Enjoy your shows. Ignore opinions you don’t like. Simple.
All the best, Rob. Keep doing what you’re doing.
-Jason Miller
