Going beyond is kinda our thing …

by Mike Bawden

From a galaxy far, far away ….

The STAR WARS universe continues to expand – and that means you might need a quick overview of the big characters to be on the lookout for in upcoming movies and streaming series on Disney+. (h/t SlashFilm)

And while you’re pondering the chance that Grand Admiral Thrawn might be coming to our favorite galaxy via Disney+ in the near future … how would you feel about Pierce Brosnan playing him? According to this article on Giant Freaking Robot, that could very well be the case.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series continues to grab headlines with reports of a brief appearance of Mace Windu in episode 4, a walk through a Jedi “tomb”, Anakin’s continued dislike of sand, and the suggestion that much more is happening than meets the eye of the casual observer in this series. It may be worth taking a second look to really understand the scope of the series and how it relates to the Skywalker saga of films.

Go to Infinity and Beyond this weekend …

LIGHTYEAR director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman talk about the metanarrative (and more) behind the Buzz Lightyear origin story.

Meanwhile, Buzz and company have been banned in Saudi Arabia and some other conservative, mostly Muslim nations over a same-sex kiss that happens during the movie.

He’s NOT Woody …

… you can call him MISTER Hanks.

Tom Hanks doesn’t have many nice things to say about THE DA VINCI CODE trilogy … too bad, I originally enjoyed Dan Brown’s book until I started looking into the history behind the story and found most of it to be rather contrived. This is a common problem with a lot of historical fiction. Some stories “manage” the historical truth better than others.

Take A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN for example. Another Tom Hanks movie and this classic changed his career. Even though he had already been nominated for an Academy Award (for BIG) by the time the role of minor-league manager Jimmy Dugan came around, Hanks says he believes the film taught him what to look for in a movie project.

It’s a great article on ScreenRant.

A re-boot show of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN is in the works with Amazon Prime. If you’re wondering if you’ve read this news before, you have. There was a short-lived series on CBS in 1993 that failed to make the playoffs.

Meanwhile in the wonderful world of technology …

You know I’m always on the lookout for news about flying cars and this is about as close as we can get … A long-range, drone taxi is one step closer to hitting the skies. Volocopter revealed that its four-set, electric VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft, the VoloConnect, completed its first flight last month and should be able to serve passengers as early as 2026.

NASA is putting together a UFO task force … what could possibly go wrong?

That’s it for today.

Does “stunt casting” work?

Does “stunt casting” work?

Imagination Connoisseur, ROBB, shares his thoughts on how Star Trek: Discovery handled its casting of Democratic politician, Stacey Abrams, as the president of a united Earth in the show’s finale. Personal politics aside, ROBB seems to feel Star Trek’s producers missed an opportunity to send a message about unity at a time when we could all use it.

Long-time PGS Member, Kenny Kraly Jr., writes in to the LET’S GET PHYSICAL MEDIA show to ask for their predictions on the possibility of getting more Superman movies out on 4k Blu-Ray.

On the topic of “Gatekeeping” …

On the topic of “Gatekeeping” …

Imagination Connoisseur, Jason Miller, writes a letter of support for ROBSERVATIONS host, Robert Meyer Burnett, who has recently proclaimed himself the Gatekeeper of Geekdom. Jason shares his experience defending RMB’s joke (made on Twitter) and arrives at an inescapable conclusion that everyone should probably take to heart.

Attention Star Command, there seems to be a problem with Buzz Lightyear

Attention Star Command, there seems to be a problem with Buzz Lightyear

ROADTRIPPIN’ co-hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Mike Bawden respond to letters from listeners proposing a variety of reasons as to why Pixar’s latest animated feature, LIGHTYEAR, didn’t meet expectations during its opening weekend. Was it a result of bad casting, a strained relationship between studios, convoluted marketing or stronger-than-expected competition? No one is sure – but it’s possible the problem runs much deeper than an origin story for an action figure might let on.

How to accept Star Trek now so you don’t go insane!

How to accept Star Trek now so you don’t go insane!

Imagination Connoisseur, Adam Talley, writes in to explain how he now views the Star Trek franchise – a way that acknowledges the “good old days” so many OG fans pine for and the new innovations we’re seeing in stores, online, and in theaters.

Why is Obi-Wan the most boring thing about the Obi-Wan Kenobi streaming series on Disney+?

Why is Obi-Wan the most boring thing about the Obi-Wan Kenobi streaming series on Disney+?

ROADTRIPPIN’ co-hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Mike Bawden discuss the broader implications of a question posed by an Imagination Connoisseur who asks why Obi-Wan Kenobi is such a boring character in his own series. In fact, one could ask why so many Star Wars series seem to be “running in place” and not really going anywhere with characters who don’t seem to be doing all that much. Is there a larger force at work here that no one seems to acknowledge? And where have we heard THAT before?

Does it make sense to remake good movies?

Does it make sense to remake good movies?

ROADTRIPPIN’ co-hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Mike Bawden respond to a letter from an Imagination Connoisseur who asks why Hollywood seems content remaking and re-booting successful movies rather than making movies with “great potential” that might have not met expectations when they were first released to the public. As Rob and Mike point out, there’s a lot more involved in a successful remake than one might imagine.

Making a case for LIFE after ALIEN

Making a case for LIFE after ALIEN

Imagination Connoisseur, S’wak Props, thinks Ridley Scott could have done much better when it came to making a sequel to his 1979 sci-fi/horror classic, ALIEN. Instead of Scott’s ALIEN COVENANT, S’wak recommends you check out Daniel Espinosa’s LIFE which includes Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds among others in the cast.
